Chopped Cheese Sandwich
15m
The Chopped Cheese Sandwich—aka chop cheese—is an iconic NYC sandwich.
Originating from the bodegas and delis of New York, it's made up of ground beef, melted cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mayo, salt, and pepper.
If you want to understand New York City, you need to understand what a Chopped Cheese Sandwich is.
Growing up in Uptown in Manhattan, the chopped cheese was a classic sandwich served at bodegas when all other places were closed.
I first encountered it when I needed a late-night munchie after partying with friends. It's always there for you when you need it, and it's the best way to start or end a long night of fun.
Dice ½ white onion
Melt ½ tbsp of butter in a large saucepan
Cut a 15 cm hoagie roll bread in half. Toast it on the pan and remove from heat
Drizzle a saucepan with extra virgin olive oil. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent. Remove from heat
Place 200 g of ground meat in a saucepan over medium-high heat
Season with black pepper and salt to taste
Sear the patty until it's brownish
Mash and distribute meat evenly for even cooking
Add the onions and stir until they are fully cooked
Top the meat with 3 slices of cheddar cheese
Cover the meat with a bowl to completely melt the cheese. Remove the bowl with the help of a towel, as it will be hot
Place the meat and cheese on the bottom toasted bread
Add 1 sliced tomato
Season with black pepper and salt to taste
Drizzle mayonnaise to taste
Add shredded lettuce to taste
Top with the other half of the bread
Wrap the sandwich tightly with parchment paper
Cut it in half. The chopped cheese sandwich is ready
Dig in and enjoy!
