Jumbo Shumai
Shumai, a Chinese import, are ubiquitous in Japan. This version is a jumbo version of the standard Shumai and a go-to dish in the Orkin household. These open-faced dumplings are delicious, fun, and great as part of a meal or as a snack.
Peel and small dice <quantity>1</quantity> large onion
Peel and grate <quantity>2<unit>tbsp</unit></quantity> of ginger
Combine the onion and ginger with <quantity>3½<unit>cups</unit></quantity> of ground pork
Add <quantity>¼<unit>cup</unit></quantity> of potato starch and <quantity>4<unit>tbsp</unit></quantity> of soy sauce
Add <quantity>2<unit>tbsp</unit></quantity> of sugar and <quantity>2<unit>tbsp</unit></quantity> of toasted sesame oil
Add <quantity>2<unit>tbsp</unit></quantity> of mushroom powder and mix to combine
Place <quantity>2<unit>tbsp</unit></quantity> of the filling on the center of the guioza wrapper and slowly turn it on your palm while folding the edges up to form the dumpling. Place them in a steamer basket
Steam the dumplings for 8m. The jumbo shumai is ready
